In the resulting book “ Nomadland“, Bruder documented the simultaneous fragility and strength of these incredible people who are just trying to survive. Bruder immediately immersed herself into the culture, performing jobs, making friends and living out of a van.
Now living in their vehicles such as RVs and campers, these workers travel from job to job, doing a variety of menial and/or dangerous tasks. She lives in Brooklyn with a dog named Max and more plants than you can shake a leafy stick at.Writer, journalist and Columbia University teacher Jessica Bruder drove across the United States to learn more about the community of “workampers”, rootless migrant workers who never were able to recover from the 2008 recession. Jessica is also the author of Burning Book and is now working on a new book about trust in the age of surveillance. She has also written for New York Magazine, WIRED, Harper’s Magazine, The Washington Post, The Guardian and The Nation. Jessica has been teaching narrative storytelling at Columbia Journalism School and contributing to The New York Times for more than a decade. Now in post-production, it's scheduled for release in September of 2020. Nomadland was adapted for a film of the same name featuring Frances McDormand and David Strathairn, distributed by Fox Searchlight. Anthony Lukas Prize and the Helen Bernstein Book Award.
